Safe ATM Banking Tips

It’s convenient to get cash, pay your bills, or transfer funds through an ATM. Take these safety precautions to minimize the chances of having your card, card details, or cash stolen when you use an ATM:

  • Plan your transaction ahead to minimize your time at an ATM.
  • Avoid using an ATM in suspicious locations or areas with poor lighting.
  • Look around and be alert, especially in areas unfamiliar to you.
  • Be alert and put your personal safety first. If someone is crowding or watching you, cancel the transaction and go to another machine.
  • Never accept help from a stranger.
  • If you spot anything unusual about the ATM, or there are signs of tampering, do not use it.
    • Criminals may install entire false fronts to ATMs to capture PINs and money. Check the ATM for loose wires, adhesive smears, or components that are wobbly.
    • An unusually bulky card slot may suggest a “skimmer”. A skimmer is a tool attached to ATM that swipes your card details, and is very hard to spot.
    • A blocked or loose card slot may suggest the presence of a “Lebanese loop”. This is a tiny sleeve with a hook like barb that captures your card in the machine.
    • If PIN pad feels loose, thick or spongey it may be a fake. This is known as a ‘pin-pad overlay’ which allows criminals to capture your PIN. Sometimes they are even transferred by Wi-Fi to recording device.
  • Cover your hand as you enter your PIN on the keypad.
  • Once your transaction is completed, immediately leave the area.
  • Be aware of your surroundings as you leave the ATM. If you believe you are being followed, go to a busy area and call the police.
